The euro gained against the dollar amid speculation the European Central Bank may come to the aid of Greece in an effort to halt the contagion that sent the common currency to a 14-month low.
The dollar earlier gained the most in over a year versus the yen after a report showed U.S. employers added more jobs than forecast in April. The pound rose from a 13-month low against the greenback as Conservative challenger David Cameron appealed to the Liberal Democrats to form an alliance to oust Prime Minister Gordon Brown after the U.K. general election failed to deliver a majority to any party.
“Any talk on something to relieve funding pressures is taken very positively,” said Amelia Bourdeau, a currency strategist in Stamford, Connecticut at UBS AG. “Nothing has been confirmed. The market really wants to see some sort of solution to fix the funding issues, which investors expect to get worse.”
EUR/USD the dollar is trading rangebound.
GBP/USD the pound is adjusting after weakening.
